will house around 80 research teams. In all, 600 researchers and technicians will work at the ICM.
will be able to accommodate 20 hospitalized patients. Research will be conducted here to determine the underlying mechanisms of the main diseases of the nervous system and to test newly developed drugs.
- The cell imaging platform (electron microscopes , ...)
- The neuroimaging platform (the ICM already has the first 3-Tesla MRI scanner for clinical research in Paris. This instrument produces tridimensional maps of the human brain structures, identifying possible lesions or simple dysfunctional syndromes, by subjecting the patient to a magnetic field. ICM plans to acquire three additional 3-Tesla MRI and one 7-Tesla MRI.)
- Platforms for genomics (analysis of gene mutations), transcriptomics (identification of actively expressed genes), proteomics (study of protein diversity and function), Metabolomics (analysis of substancesproduced by brain metabolism).
Patient databases (approximately 100,000 patients with nervous system disorders examined every year), tissue, DNA and cell collections already exist at the Pitié-Salpêtrière. These invaluable resources will be available to ICM researchers in France and abroad, due to the creation of:
- computerized databases, one for each pathological condition, of patients who wish to participate in research (in accordance with the Huriet Law that protects the anonymity and the safety of persons participating in biomedical research);
- DNA banks for mutation research;
- cell banks, with particular reference to stem cells;
- tissue banks of biopsy and other surgical excisions

The goal of the ICM, a research foundation recognized of public utility, is to support the development of research on the brain and spinal cord, in any way possible.
