ICM follows on the historical tradition of clinical neurology at the Salpêtrière Hospital. The first Chair of Neurology was created here at the end of the 19h century,
on the site where the ICM is being developed today. The Salpêtrière Hospital was the stage on which the science of neurology evolved, thanks to the men and women who have
made medical history. Notably, it was on this site that the first operations on the brain were performed.
This medical tradition remains alive, so much so that the facilities for neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery, spinal column and cord surgery, and rehabilitation at the
Pitié-Salpêtrière are on the scale of a hospital in themselves.
The Pitié-Salpêtrière draws patients from well beyond Paris and its surrounding region; almost 40% of the patients come from the French provinces or from abroad.

The ICM will thus support and reinforce medical and nursing care in the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.
The ICM faces the Department of Nervous System Diseases at Pitié-Salpêtrière. Its vocation is to carry on a tradition of excellence, by establishing,
on the same site, the departments of Research and Development and Applied Medicine, both at the forefront of technology.
In this way, patients will be able to benefit from the most up-to-date care and , if they so desire, they can participate in medical research, protected by stringent legal and
ethical constraints.
The ICM will be closely linked to the « Pole of the nervous systems diseases» (neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery, neurological rehabilitation) which will care for
the patients.
The ICM is an emblematic of research institute. The superb building, created by Wilmotte & Associates, will comprise 22,000 sqm of laboratory space, including technological
platforms (including neuroimaging), as well as the Clinical Investigation Center (CIC) which can receive up to 20 patients at a time.
The institute will host 600 researchers, administrators and students. The aim is scientific excellence, in order to find new treatments for the most frequent severe neurological and
psychiatric disorders.
